Migration Data

Utilising data provided by the Australian Government Centre for Population, this week’s article will review the internal migration of Australian east coast cities and major upcoming events within Queensland.

The graph below shows a clear picture of resident’s movements within Australia over the past decade. A clear trend can be seen in both Sydney and Brisbane, which have been generally diverging over the period. Since March 2011, Sydney migration has averaged a net loss of 1.43%, while Brisbane grew at a rate of 18.22%.

Melbourne, conversely, to both other cities, has experienced extreme volatility in migration data. Between September 2013 and March 2017, the city achieved an average growth of 15.26%; however, since then has rapidly declined, averaging a loss of 21.46% (5,000 residents per quarter).

Global events coming to Queensland

With the ever-growing trend of positive net internal migration to Queensland, it is unsurprising to see an increasing number of global events set to take place over the next decade. Our research has uncovered the following three major events set to bring in AUD billions in economic activity and millions of visitors.

Olympics – Brisbane 2032

Officially announced on the 21st of July 2021 by IOC president Thomas Bach, several comprehensive reports have been published around the anticipated economic boosts accompanying the 2032 Olympic games to be held in Brisbane for both the city and greater Queensland.

It is estimated the games will bring in AUD billions to the Queensland and greater Australian economies in an assortment of tourism, property, sports and associated industries.

Rugby World Cup & Women’s World Cup – 2027 & 2029

This May 2022, World Rugby confirmed Australia has been selected to host both the 2027 World Cup (RWC) and 2029 Women’s World Cup.

Sir Rod Eddington, Bid Advisory Board Chairman said regarding the successful bids “RWC would welcome two million attendees, including 200,000 international visitors, delivering $2.5 billion in direct and indirect expenditure for the economy and creating 13,300 equivalent FTE jobs.

Pacific Air show

Dates have been confirmed as the 18th – 20th August 2023 for the Pacific Airshow to be held for the first time ever outside the USA, in the Gold Coast, Queensland. Gold Coast Mayor – Tom Tate, released statistics from the US show, which generates $100m for the local economy, attracting around 3-million visitors and many more through television and digital media platforms.

Highlights from the show include the USAF thunderbirds, US Navy Blue Angels, Red Bull Air Force and live music performances across the three-day event.
